To My Rational Friends
To my rational friends – those who voted against Trump – here’s some positive news for the holidays: Things might turn out alright.
Possible Positive Outcomes of the Trump Presidency
When considering foreign policy, especially with Iran, nothing has really worked so far. Recent developments in Syria might be beneficial regardless of who is president. Trump’s “maximum pressure” strategy might be just as effective as Biden’s approach.
Foreign Policy Considerations
Regarding China, the situation is similar. The threat or implementation of tariffs might encourage China to align more closely with global norms. I’d be willing to pay a bit more for manufactured goods if it results in a better global environment.
In Israel, if Netanyahu offers Trump a peace agreement in Gaza, that would certainly be an improvement.
NATO and Other Global Issues
With NATO, Trump might just be negotiating. He wants member countries to contribute more to their defense budgets. If they do, and the U.S. remains in the alliance, it would be a win-win scenario.
In Ukraine, a clear victory for the positive forces seems out of reach. Perhaps a negotiated settlement that ends the conflict wouldn’t be such a bad outcome.
As for North Korea, nothing has worked for decades. Any action Trump takes is comparable to past efforts unless he instigates World War III. I doubt he would do that, as it would ruin all of his golf courses.
Domestic Policy Thoughts
On domestic policy, maybe Trump is just bluffing about imposing 20% tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Perhaps our neighbors will make minor adjustments, Trump will declare a major victory, and life will continue.
Regarding the deportation of illegal immigrants, Trump might deport some undocumented individuals who have committed crimes. Beyond that, deportations would become costly and unpopular, and likely stop. Trump would claim success, and things might return to a better normal.
Economic and Environmental Considerations
The topic of tax cuts is complex. Trump’s tax cuts favored the wealthy and continuing them could worsen the federal deficit. However, we’ve lived with these tax cuts for six years and managed. Politicians have overlooked deficits since Reagan’s era, and we’ve managed to get by so far. Maybe there won’t be consequences just yet.
On climate change, perhaps the market economy will help. As coal and gas become costlier compared to nuclear, solar, and wind energy, people might naturally shift to more affordable and eco-friendly options.
Looking Forward
See? Things might not be as dire as they seem.
I admit you’ll likely have to endure Trump in the media for another four years, as he continues to seek attention without good reason. I can’t help with that, but you can choose to ignore him.
In the meantime, consider this: You’ll always be able to proudly say, “I’ve never voted for a convicted felon to be President of the United States.” That puts you ahead of millions of Americans.
