Despite DePaul’s recent improvements under new coach Chris Holtmann, they were no match for St. John’s. The Johnnies led by 11 at halftime and continued to extend their lead in the second half. Kadary Richmond played aggressively and contributed significantly to the team’s success.
RJ Luis led St. John’s with 19 points, followed by Simeon Wilcher with 16 points and Zuby Ejiofor with 12 points. Deivon Smith, who was making his first start after a suspension, also played well with nine points, eight assists, six rebounds, and five steals.
St. John’s dominated in various aspects of the game, including rebounding, points in the paint, and points off turnovers. The team’s defense was particularly impressive, holding DePaul to just 30% shooting from beyond the arc.
Overall, it was a strong performance by St. John’s in their Big East opener against DePaul.
