A woman in her 60s driving a blue BMW was killed in a car crash in La Palma on Wednesday afternoon. The crash occurred when a theft suspect, identified as Anthony Hanzel, 40, of Anaheim, crashed into her car while fleeing from police. Hanzel was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries and will face charges including hit-and-run, petty theft, and felony evading.
The incident began when a Fullerton police detective spotted the theft suspect driving away from the area of North Gilbert Street and West Malvern Avenue. The suspect fled from officers, leading to a chase that resulted in a nonfatal hit-and-run collision before the fatal crash in La Palma.
Surveillance camera footage showed the suspect running a red light and colliding with the victim’s car, causing it to hit three other vehicles waiting at the intersection. Witnesses described the chaotic scene, with one person mentioning a “complete T-bone” collision.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will be investigating the fatal crash, which resulted in the tragic death of the woman driving the blue BMW. The suspect’s reckless actions not only led to the loss of life but also put other innocent drivers at risk during the police pursuit.
