Senators unanimously approved funding for pediatric cancer research that was removed from a stopgap funding bill. Democrats criticized the removal of funding for National Institutes of Health research for pediatric cancer after President-elect Donald Trump intervened. However, a clean version of the bill has been in the Senate since March, and it was approved quietly before the stopgap funding bill. The Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0 was passed, reauthorizing pediatric disease research through 2028. The bill was led by Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Jennifer Wexton. Senators were also expected to move forward with the government funding bill and the Social Security Fairness Act.
