Congress is facing the possibility of a government shutdown with no clear solution in sight. The bill also included funding for farmers and communities affected by natural disasters.
If an agreement is not reached by midnight on Friday, federal workers could face furloughs and delays in payment. Essential workers would continue to work without pay, while non-essential workers could be suspended. Federal agencies have already started notifying employees about potential furloughs.
During a shutdown, national parks, museums, and federal lending programs could be closed or delayed. Military personnel would remain on duty, but civilian employees could face furloughs. Social Security, Medicare, and other essential services would continue, but there could be delays in processing new applications. Members of Congress would still receive pay, but non-essential staff could be furloughed.
