Not too long ago, Marvel released variant covers showing Godzilla battling superheroes like the Avengers and Spider-Man. These days, Godzilla is ready to take on anyone, regardless of their size. So, it’s not surprising that those covers hinted at his upcoming encounters with Marvel’s top superheroes.
Recently, the Hollywood Reporter announced “Godzilla vs. Marvel,” marking the first crossover between Marvel and Godzilla since 1977’s “Godzilla, King of the Monsters.” This new event will be a series of standalone stories where Godzilla either fights or teams up with various Marvel heroes over the years. The first story, by Ryan North and John Romita Jr., involves a meeting with the Fantastic Four. In this tale, they battle King Ghidorah, who has become the new Herald of Galactus. While the Fantastic Four face this cosmic dragon, Godzilla joins forces with the Silver Surfer to save the planet.
Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief, C.B. Cebulski, mentioned that the initial discussions with Toho were about reprinting the old comics. However, both parties soon realized they were excited to create new content together. These crossovers came about in collaboration with Toho, and they felt that Godzilla’s 70th anniversary was the perfect time to launch them. Dan Buckley, Marvel’s comics/franchise president, pointed out that Godzilla has gained popularity recently, thanks to “Godzilla Minus One” and the MonsterVerse movies from the U.S. Marvel saw this as an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. If this crossover succeeds, Cebulski expressed Marvel’s willingness to collaborate with Toho on more thrilling projects.
Buckley emphasized that Kaiju, especially Godzilla, hold a significant place in Marvel’s comic history. They were eager to explore these themes with Toho’s teams. This collaboration is part of today’s cultural trend and highlights the enjoyable experiences the comics industry can offer. While storytelling remains their main focus, fun crossover opportunities like this provide fans with an exciting escape they won’t want to miss.
“Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four” will launch in March 2025, with details on future issues and their creators to be announced later.
