We might soon see the arrival of the next HDMI standard, HDMI 2.2, within just a few weeks. An email from the HDMI Forum, which was shared with the press including Engadget this weekend, mentions that a new HDMI specification will be unveiled on Monday, January 6, in Las Vegas, just before CES 2025 officially begins. Currently, details are limited — we only know that the new specification will “enable a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates” and will require a new HDMI cable.
It has been seven years since HDMI 2.1 was introduced. The most recent update to HDMI 2.1b in 2023 supported bandwidths of up to 48Gbps and resolutions up to 10K. According to the email, the upcoming HDMI technology will offer even higher bandwidth. That’s all the information available for now, but we will have a team at CES to keep you updated on this and other announcements as they happen.
