This Week’s ChromeOS Update: New Safety and Accessibility Features
This week, Google announced the release of ChromeOS M131 for all Chromebook users, introducing a useful “Safety reset” feature. This feature allows users to reset their laptops without erasing all data. Additionally, the update includes a “Flash notifications” option in the accessibility settings to assist users who might have difficulty hearing or seeing notifications.
The “Safety reset” feature acts similarly to ChromeOS’s Powerwash, which resets the device to factory settings. However, unlike Powerwash, Safety reset retains local data, apps, bookmarks, and saved passwords, making it a more convenient option for dealing with issues like unusual pop-ups or suspected viruses.
Google explains that you can access the Safety reset dialog by pressing CTRL + Shift + Search + R on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can find it in the “Safety and privacy” settings menu or by searching in Settings or the Launcher with keywords such as “Pop-up,” “Spam,” or “Virus.”
The new Flash notifications setting is found under “Audio and captions” in the accessibility settings. This feature provides a visual alert to help those who might miss notifications due to hearing impairments or the use of screen magnification. Users can choose from different flash colors and use a preview button to see how it looks.
