Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was released from the hospital after having surgery to stop a brain bleed. The 79-year-old president appeared at a press conference with doctors to show that he was recovering well. Lula expressed his determination to continue working and building the country despite his age. The medical team confirmed that the surgery was successful, and Lula would be able to walk and have meetings while resting at home in Sao Paulo until Thursday.
Lula’s doctors advised against international travel for now, but he may be able to travel to Brasilia after a medical check-up. The president also commented on the recent arrest of Gen. Walter Braga Netto, a former member of President Jair Bolsonaro’s government, in connection with an alleged coup plot. Lula condemned any disrespect for democracy and the constitution, expressing his disbelief that high-ranking military officials were involved in such actions.
Braga Netto was indicted in November, along with Bolsonaro and others, for allegedly plotting a coup to keep Bolsonaro in power after the 2022 election. No formal charges have been filed against Braga Netto yet, but his arrest was related to obstructing the collection of evidence.
