Rome’s Colosseum, a UNESCO heritage site, is offering a unique “gladiatorial experience” in partnership with Airbnb. Participants will don historically accurate armor and engage in battle like ancient gladiators. However, this initiative has faced criticism from prominent Romans who believe the monument should not be turned into a theme park.
Historian Alexander Mariotti points out that the Colosseum has always been a venue for dramatic spectacles, including naval battles, animal fights, and public executions. While some oppose the Airbnb partnership, Mariotti argues that the Colosseum has a history of hosting extravagant shows.
Despite the controversy, Airbnb promises its 16 faux gladiators a unique experience complete with refreshments like grapes and nuts. However, some may wonder if a gladiator can also get a taste of authentic Roman cuisine like Spaghetti Carbonara during the event.
